§ Title: The WHO Global Database on Child Growth and Malnutrition; Description: A nutritional surveillance system that compiles, standardizes, and disseminates results of nutritional surveys performed worldwide. Specific objectives of the database are to assess the prevalence and secular trends in stunting, underweight, wasting and overweight of preschool children, and enable international comparisons of nutritional data. Detailed description of the database can be found at the database’s web site: http://www.who.int/nutgrowthdb; Role: Principal Investigator (1989-ongoing).
§ Title: The WHO Multicentre Growth Reference Study (MGRS); Description: A community-based, multi-country project to develop new international growth standards to assess the growth and development of healthy, breastfed infants and children up to five years of age. The pooled sample from the 6 participating countries (Brazil, India, Ghana, Norway, Oman, USA) is about 8500 children. The new anthropometric tools developed through this project will provide more accurate estimates of malnutrition and allow for the early identification of children in the process of becoming malnourished. These tools will also be applicable to the detection of early childhood obesity and will be linked to references for motor development milestones. The goal is for most of the 99 countries presently using the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS)/World Health Organization (WHO) growth reference to adopt the new standards, or to have initiated the transition to the new standards, by 2010. Role: Study Coordinator (1990-2010).
